The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reassured residents and political stakeholders that Abuja will remain calm, orderly and well-managed as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.
Wike gave the assurance on Thursday in Abuja while delivering a New Year message to residents, stating that the FCT Administration is fully prepared to effectively manage the heightened political activities that usually precede national elections in the nation’s capital.
He noted that as the seat of government, Abuja would inevitably experience intense political engagement, but stressed that the administration would ensure all campaigns and related events are conducted without disruption.
“Being the Centre of Government, the Federal Capital Territory would witness a beehive of activities.
“Be assured that the FCT Administration will continue to provide an environment conducive to the orderly hosting of all political events preceding and relating to the general elections,” he said.
The minister emphasised that the administration is committed to guaranteeing a free, fair and secure political environment for all political parties and stakeholders as the election season draws closer.
Reflecting on the year just ended, Wike thanked residents and visitors for their cooperation and support, attributing the progress recorded across the territory to their collective efforts.
He described the past year as one of notable accomplishments despite challenges, saying the administration achieved “great strides, massive developments and overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles, all thanks to your cooperation.”
While wishing residents a prosperous 2026, the minister said the new year offers an opportunity to consolidate and expand on existing achievements.
“It is my earnest hope that this year, our Administration will receive more support from residents that will galvanise our plans and projections for the FCT into tangible developments, projects, and facilities that will greatly enhance the quality of life for all residents regardless of their social status,” he stated.
Wike highlighted ongoing and upcoming projects across key sectors, noting that the administration has already “laid the groundwork for projects and programmes that will trigger positive developments in critical sectors of society, such as education, health, the judiciary, transportation, agriculture, and security.”
He added that residents should expect the commissioning of major infrastructure, including “rehabilitated schools, roads, bridges, health facilities, transportation hubs, facilities for the judiciary, security infrastructure, and programmes that will impact FCT residents positively.”
The minister linked recent developments in the territory to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, explaining that growth has extended beyond the city centre to satellite towns, reaching “from the Abuja Municipal to far-flung areas such as Abaji, Kuje and Kwali.”
Describing 2026 as a significant year, Wike noted that it marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the FCT, describing it as “a testament to the vision of our founding fathers, and to the resilience of Nigerians who have continuously demonstrated the resolve to coexist in peace and unity these past 50 years.”
He also called on residents to actively participate in the forthcoming Area Council elections, underscoring the importance of responsible civic participation.
“Eligible voters are expected to exercise their rights to choose their leaders at the local government level. I urge you all to use your votes wisely,” he said, assuring that the administration would ensure the elections are conducted “in a free and fair atmosphere devoid of violence and illegalities.”
Wike concluded by urging residents to welcome the new year with hope and unity, calling for collective commitment to progress.
“Let us do so with dogged determination, unshaken faith, and the unity of purpose that never fails to deliver the desired peace, prosperity, and progress that the FCT truly craves,” he said.
