Wike orders demolition of illegal estate in Abuja Green Area

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has directed the demolition of an estate constructed illegally on land designated as a green area in Guzape, Abuja.

Wike issued the directive on Monday while carrying out an inspection of several ongoing projects across the capital city.

According to the minister, the land had originally been allocated for park and recreational use but was later converted into residential development without the necessary approval.

He added that in addition to demolishing the structures, the allocation for the land would also be withdrawn, stressing that the FCT Administration would strictly enforce land-use regulations in accordance with the Abuja Master Plan.

The minister cautioned developers against violating planning guidelines, stating that authorities would not tolerate deliberate breaches of approved land use.

“People think that government will come and go and they will continue what they are doing. We will not allow that here. It does not matter who is involved; we will do the right thing.

“This place was given for Park and Recreation not for the development of an estate. But from what you have seen, they are developing it into an estate, which is a clear violation. We will not allow that,” he said.

Wike further explained that some developers exploit bureaucratic weaknesses and occasionally collaborate with insiders in government institutions to obtain approval for projects that violate planning regulations.

He acknowledged that certain civil servants might be involved in such actions but insisted that this would not prevent the administration from enforcing the law.

Commenting on the projects inspected during the tour, the minister said the exercise was aimed at evaluating the progress of major developments expected to be commissioned as part of activities marking Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

Regarding the road connecting Renewed Hope City in Karsana to Kubwa, Wike noted that construction had advanced significantly and expressed confidence that it would be ready for inauguration.

He also inspected Arteria Road N16, which links Jahi and Gwarimpa, describing the quality of the work as impressive and indicating that the project is expected to be completed by the end of May.

In addition, the minister visited the Airport Road–Kuje Highway as well as the road connecting Kuje to Gwagwalada, where he expressed satisfaction with the speed and standard of construction.

Wike emphasized that road development remains a key component of the administration’s broader transport strategy for the territory.

“You cannot have a good transport system without connectivity and a strong road network. When there is good road infrastructure, transport becomes easy and efficient,” he said.

He reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to strictly enforce urban planning regulations while continuing to deliver infrastructure that improves mobility and supports the growth of communities across the FCT.
