Wike reinstates sacked acting FCT-IRS chair, education mandate secretary

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reinstated Michael Ango as the Acting Chairman of the FCT Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, disclosed that the minister also reinstated the Mandate Secretary for Education, Danlami Hayyo.

“The Minister, who warned that acts of indiscipline will not be tolerated among officials of the FCTA, directed the Dr Danlami Hayyo and Michael Ango to resume duty with immediate effect,” the statement read.

Ango’s Ordeal

Ango was relieved of his duties on December 5, when the minister removed him as Acting Chairman of the FCT-IRS.

Although no official reason was given for his removal, Wike’s spokesman had stated at the time that the most senior officer of the FCT-IRS was directed to take over leadership of the agency.

Ango was appointed in an acting capacity by President Bola Tinubu in August 2024. He was described by the president as an experienced professional with strong expertise in revenue administration, financial management and organisational leadership.

Last month, staff of the FCT-IRS organised an event tagged “A Night with Ango”, where he was commended for his leadership style, dedication to staff welfare and efforts to reposition the agency as a model revenue institution.

False School-Closure

On November 26, the FCT minister suspended Hayyo following the circulation of a memo on November 25 directing government schools in Abuja to close on November 28.

The memo, signed by the Director of School Services, Aishatu Sani Alhassan, instructed all public senior secondary schools in the FCT to shut down “on or before Friday, November 28” over unspecified security concerns.

School principals were directed to immediately end academic activities and send students home “in an orderly and safe manner.”

However, the FCT administration later clarified that no such directive was authorised.

Wike’s spokesman had debunked claims that all government schools in the Federal Capital Territory were ordered to close by November 28, 2025, stressing that “no such decision was taken at any level of the administration.”

The minister also directed the acting Head of Service, Nancy Nathan, to commence disciplinary proceedings against Alhassan in line with civil service regulations.

In recent months, Wike has carried out a series of reshuffles across FCT agencies as part of reforms aimed at boosting service delivery and improving revenue performance.
