The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, Ado Ekiti Chapter, has inaugurated a new executive committee and called for increased opportunities for women in engineering.
The Chairman, Esther Adejuwon, made the call in Ado Ekiti on Thursday shortly after her inauguration as the Ekiti State chairman of the association and the swearing in of the 2025–2027 executive members, expressing confidence in the ability of women engineers to contribute meaningfully to the profession.
The association, which focuses on mentoring, supporting, and empowering female science students in secondary schools and engineering undergraduates in tertiary institutions, also recognised four outstanding female engineering graduates from Ekiti State University for the 2025/2026 session during the event.
The awardees — Omojola Adebanji (Mechanical Engineering), Oluwajomiloju Adigun (Computer Engineering), Ruth Adebayo (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) and Praise Olu-Alonge (Civil Engineering) — were honoured for emerging as top graduates at the university’s convocation ceremony.
Adejuwon noted that the dominance of female students among the best graduating engineers reflects their competence and resilience.
“As such, we deserve to be put in higher and better places where we can perform. We are capable and have capacity, we want to perform,” she said.
She also pledged her administration’s commitment to strengthening the APWEN network, promoting continuous development, and creating more opportunities for women to thrive and lead in engineering, while mentoring younger generations and maintaining professional standards.
“This moment is not just a personal achievement, but a collective one and I stand as a representative of strong, capable and visionary women who continue to break barriers and contribute meaningfully to the engineering profession,” she added.
The APWEN president and chairman of the occasion, Chinyere Igwegbe, also congratulated the new leadership, describing the theme of the event as a call to action for women in engineering to provide solutions to societal challenges.
She urged the new executives to empower young girls in science and technology, support female graduates in professional examinations, and encourage practising engineers to take up leadership roles and technical responsibilities.
Igwegbe also called on government and private sector stakeholders to actively engage women engineers in projects, noting that recognition must go beyond praise to include employment, contracts, and inclusion in decision making.
The guest lecturer, Tomilayo Adeniyi, encouraged women engineers to continuously improve their technical skills and embrace lifelong learning in order to develop innovative solutions.
The newly inaugurated executives include Olaoti (Vice Chairman), Felicia Afolayan (General Secretary), Florence Akinola (Financial Secretary), Oluwaseun Kazeem (Treasurer), Feyisayo Jegede (Assistant Secretary), Christiana Wumi (Technical Secretary), Peace Ogunluyi (Assistant Technical Secretary), Adenike Olowoshile (Public Relations Officer), Segun Olowolagba (Assistant PRO), Omojola Owoeye (ex-officio), Khadijat Temitope (Internal Auditor), and Aderonke Olajide (immediate past chairman).
