Nigerian workers have joined their counterparts worldwide to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day, as state governors commended their contributions to national development.
Observed annually on May 1, the event recognises the role of workers and the labour movement globally. To mark the 2026 celebration, the Federal Government declared a public holiday.
In a goodwill message, Siminalayi Fubara praised the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, and their affiliates in Rivers State for resolving disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation. He noted that this approach has enhanced industrial harmony and urged labour unions to sustain peaceful engagement.
Fubara also revealed that the ongoing rehabilitation of the State Secretariat Complex would improve working conditions and boost productivity. He added that civil servants had remained resilient over the past 35 months despite political challenges, assuring them that their sacrifices would be rewarded.
In Katsina State, Dikko Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare during the May Day celebration at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium. Speaking on the theme, “Insecurity, Poverty – Bane of Decent Work,” he acknowledged current economic difficulties but highlighted efforts such as recruitment into key sectors like education and healthcare to improve service delivery and reduce unemployment.
Radda urged workers to complement government initiatives by contributing actively to the state’s development, stressing that a motivated workforce is vital for sustainable growth.
Similarly, Hyacinth Alia commended workers in Benue State and across Nigeria, describing the celebration as an opportunity to recognise their role in driving development. He highlighted their contributions to his administration’s seven-point agenda, SACHIIP, which focuses on areas including security, agriculture, infrastructure, and governance.
Alia assured that his government would continue to prioritise workers’ welfare and capacity building, while also appreciating labour unions for their cooperation in enhancing productivity across the state.
