The federal government has announced that suspects arrested in connection with the killings in Yelewata, Benue State, will be arraigned on Monday.
In June 2025, suspected criminal herders attacked Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 people.
Following the incident, the inspector-general of police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, disclosed that 28 suspects linked to the attack had been arrested.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Kamarudeen Ogundele, senior assistant to the president on communication and publicity in the office of the attorney-general of the federation, said the suspects would be brought before Joyce Abdul-Malik, a justice of the federal high court in Abuja.
The government said the arraignment came after a “painstaking investigation and collaboration” among relevant security and investigative agencies.
It further assured Nigerians that “justice will be ensured in the matter”.
According to the statement, the prosecution is intended to send “a strong signal to the enemies of the country, acting under any disguise”.
Ogundele added that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to safeguarding lives and property in line with constitutional provisions.
