Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has hailed Nigerian workers describing them as the backbone of the nation’s journey towards prosperity.
In a statement on Wednesday, Paul Ibe, the media adviser to 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), hailed the resilience and sacrifices of Nigerian workers, noting that their contributions remain vital to the nation’s progress.
Recall that the federal government on Tuesday, declared Thursday a public holiday to mark this year’s Workers’ Day, celebrated annually on May 1.
The former vice-president said the true essence of Workers’ Day can only be achieved when both the government and private sector prioritise workers’ welfare in their policies and actions.
“In the face of relentless hardship and meagre compensation, Nigerian workers have continued to bear the burdens of our economic aspirations with silent heroism,” the statement reads.
“Yet, it is disheartening that those entrusted with the reins of policy and governance have failed to reciprocate this steadfast commitment with tangible acts of support and justice.”
He lamented that the current government has yet to implement meaningful palliative measures to ease the hardships faced by workers amidst economic challenges.
He asked the leadership of labour unions to remain steadfast in its advocacy for good governance, describing the struggle as the last hope for the ordinary Nigerian.
“The labour force is the soul of our nation; both governments and employers to uphold safeguards that protect the dignity, benefits, and entitlements of workers,” the former vice-president said.
“Policymakers should draw inspiration from the theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Social Justice and Decent Work. Safety and Health of Workers,’ and embrace the labour force not as a mere tool but as an equal partner in the journey to national greatness.”
Abubakar reiterated that the celebration of Workers’ Day should honour the spirit of workers, embodied through increased productivity, patriotism, and respect for labour.
