APGA sweeps Anambra LG elections, wins all 21 chairmanship seats

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has secured all 21 chairmanship positions in the Anambra State local government elections held on Saturday.

The party also won all councillorship seats across the state, according to results formally declared by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) on Sunday.

Genevieve Osakwe, chairperson of ANSIEC, announced the results at the commission’s headquarters in Awka, the state capital.

Osakwe confirmed that APGA candidates emerged victorious in all 21 local government areas, including the councillorship elections.

She said the commission thoroughly collated and reviewed the results to ensure accuracy.

“All the candidates of APGA have been officially declared winners as councilors and executive council chairmen-elects,” Osakwe said.

“The elections took place across 362 electoral wards and 21 local government areas (LGAs) in Anambra state, and it was conducted in a peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible manner in line with the state electoral laws and guidelines.”

The ANSIEC chairperson said voting took place across all polling units in the state and described the exercise as peaceful and credible.

She also praised residents for participating in the election and commended security agencies for maintaining order throughout the exercise.

APGA was the only political party to field candidates in 20 of the 21 local government areas.

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) presented candidates only in Anambra East Local Government Area, while other opposition parties did not participate in the election.

No opposition party, candidate or agent was present at the ANSIEC office during the formal declaration of the results.

Osakwe announced the names and scores of the APGA candidates individually before declaring them winners after they secured the highest number of votes.

She explained that the results had already been announced at the various polling units on Saturday, with Sunday’s event serving as the formal confirmation of the outcome.

“We carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure that there were no mistakes. All the scores and the winners were announced at the polling units yesterday. We are here today to affirm the results as recorded,” she said.
