The Kano State House of Assembly on Monday approved the nomination of Murtala Garo as Deputy Governor, following the presentation and adoption of the report by its ad hoc screening committee.
Garo’s confirmation followed the submission of the committee’s report by its chairman, the Deputy Speaker, Bello Butubutua, during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Falgore.
The committee had been set up after Governor Abba Yusuf submitted Garo’s name to the Assembly for screening and confirmation as deputy governor nominee.
Presenting the findings, Butubutua stated that the nominee underwent a thorough screening process and was found suitable for the position.
He explained that the committee carefully reviewed Garo’s academic qualifications, professional experience, and personal background in accordance with the Assembly’s established procedures.
Yusuf had forwarded the nomination to the Assembly on 22 April for consideration and approval.
He noted that the nomination was made in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which empowers a state governor to appoint a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy.
Garo, aged 48, was described as a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of experience in public service.
His appointment follows the resignation of the former deputy governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, in March 2026.
