Osinbajo urges Service-Driven Leadership in Politics

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has underscored the importance of service-oriented leadership in both politics and governance, describing it as not only essential but also a privilege.

He made these remarks while delivering the keynote address at the Rotary International District 9141 Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. His speech, titled “The Magic of Connection: The Imperative and Privilege of Service”, highlighted the need for politics to prioritise fundamental services such as quality education, accessible healthcare, and a strong social security system—rights he asserted belong to every citizen.

Citing Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s introduction of free basic education in Western Nigeria, Osinbajo praised it as a landmark in selfless governance, noting that the initiative was launched despite its significant financial implications.

Reflecting on his involvement in drafting the All Progressives Congress (APC) manifesto in 2014, Osinbajo recalled that one of the central discussions focused on establishing a comprehensive social investment programme. This led to schemes like the national school feeding initiative and TraderMoni.

He echoed the sentiment that a country’s true greatness lies in how it cares for its most vulnerable. Osinbajo also criticised the widespread corruption across Africa, asserting that the continent’s issue is not a lack of talent but the underuse of its human potential.

Challenging the elite, he encouraged introspection on whether their successes stem from genuine service to others. He concluded by advocating for improved budget priorities and fiscal policies that would benefit the nation’s most marginalised citizens.
