The Super Eagles have begun preparations for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign, with 20 players already in camp ahead of Friday’s opening clash against Madagascar.
Nigeria opened camp in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, on Monday, with players arriving at the team’s base ahead of the Group C qualifier scheduled to take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
The team will hold its first training session on Tuesday, September 22, with the opening 15 minutes set to be open to members of the media.
The 20 players currently in camp are Simon Moses, Akor Adams, Taiwo Awoniyi, Isaac James, Emmanuel Fernandez, Benjamin Fredericks, Moses Uzor, George Ilenikhena, Arthur Okonkwo, Alex Iwobi, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Ola Aina, Ademola Lookman, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Tolu Arokodare, Bruno Onyemaechi, Raphael Onyedika and Frank Onyeka.
Goalkeepers Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye, against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi was brought into the squad as a replacement for injured captain and talisman however, are yet to join the squad.
Head coach Eric Chelle had named a 24-man squad for Nigeria’s opening qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi was brought into the squad as a replacement for injured captain and talisman Victor Osimhen.
Osimhen’s absence means Chelle will have to rely on alternative attacking options as the Super Eagles begin their qualifying campaign.
Madagascar also arrived in Nigeria on Monday afternoon, with the Barea stepping up preparations for Friday’s encounter.
The Super Eagles will aim to make a strong start in Uyo before shifting their focus to their next qualifying fixture against Guinea-Bissau.
