A 21-year-old Nigerian basketball player at Jacksonville State University, Daniel Tobiloba Adegboyega, has been arrested in Alabama over a first-degree rape allegation and suspended indefinitely from the university’s basketball team.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred off campus on July 29.
According to court records, Adegboyega is being held without bond at the Calhoun County Jail under Aniah’s Law.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has also placed an immigration hold on him after confirming that he entered the United States on a student visa in 2022.
The immigration hold means federal authorities could assume custody once the local legal proceedings are concluded.
Under Alabama law, a conviction for first-degree rape carries the possibility of a life sentence.
Jacksonville State University confirmed the player’s suspension and has removed his profile from the team’s official website.
The 7-foot centre joined the Gamecocks in May as a transfer student after previous spells at Kennesaw State, South Florida and California Baptist, where he featured in 27 games.
The case is still under investigation, and Adegboyega is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
