Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi claimed his second successive Diamond League 100m title with another outstanding performance at the London Stadium on Saturday.
The 21-year-old sprinter defeated Jamaica’s reigning world champion, Oblique Seville, for the second time in as many weeks.
Ajayi crossed the finish line in 9.84 seconds, equalling the Nigerian national record, a time he has now recorded three times within the last two months.
The race remained closely contested over the opening 50 metres before Ajayi surged ahead in the closing stages to pull clear of Seville and secure victory.
Seville finished second in 9.87 seconds, while Britain’s Romell Glave claimed third place with a personal best of 9.97 seconds, narrowly edging Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who recorded the same time to finish fourth.
South Africa’s Gift Leotlela and American Jordan Anthony both ran sub-10-second times, finishing fifth and sixth respectively in 9.99 seconds. Britain’s Zharnel Hughes (10.02s) placed seventh, while compatriot Jeremiah Azu (10.07s) came eighth.
Ajayi’s latest victory strengthens his status as one of Team Nigeria’s leading medal prospects ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Nigeria failed to secure an individual men’s sprint medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Ajayi is also the reigning National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) champion in both the men’s 60m indoor and 100m outdoor events.
He won the NCAA 100m title with a wind-assisted 9.72-second run, placing him joint sixth alongside Asafa Powell on the list of the world’s fastest sprinters under all conditions. Only Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay, Yohan Blake, Obadele Thompson and Andre De Grasse have recorded faster times.
