Algeria files complaints with CAF, FIFA over controversial refereeing

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has confirmed that it submitted formal complaints to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA over refereeing decisions in its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Nigeria. The announcement was made Monday via the official X account of Équipe d’Algérie de football.

FAF requested an investigation to clarify the contentious calls and ensure appropriate action under existing regulations. “The Algerian Football Federation cannot overlook the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and caused widespread dissatisfaction, as they undermined the credibility of African refereeing and do not serve the image of African football internationally,” the statement read.

The complaints follow Algeria’s 2-0 defeat to Nigeria on Saturday, with goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sending the Super Eagles into the semifinals. The match ended in chaos, with Algerian players confronting officials and a failed pitch invasion by fans.

CAF confirmed it has begun an investigation into alleged misconduct, collecting match reports and video evidence, and referred the matter to its Disciplinary Board.

FAF also urged fans to remain supportive of the national team, described as being in a rebuilding phase, while emphasizing lessons from the tournament to prepare for the 2026 World Cup. The federation expressed confidence in the players, technical staff, and officials, praising their commitment throughout the competition.
