Alvarez apologises to Atletico fans over summer exit saga

Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has apologised to the club’s supporters for his controversial comments during the World Cup, admitting he understands why they were upset with him.

The Argentine striker attracted attention during the summer after suggesting that Atletico should consider selling him amid reported interest from Barcelona.

Atletico rejected the Spanish club’s offer, leaving Alvarez to continue his career in Madrid. However, his comments sparked a backlash, with sections of the Atletico fanbase booing him at the beginning of the season.

The situation has begun to improve following his recent performances. After ending his goal drought in the Champions League against Stuttgart during the week, Alvarez scored the decisive goal in Atletico’s 1-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday.

Speaking after the match, the forward admitted that his earlier remarks were a mistake and acknowledged the loyalty supporters had shown him.

He said he regretted both the way he expressed himself and the timing of his comments, adding that he would have shared the fans’ frustration if he had been in their position.

Alvarez also expressed gratitude for the supporters’ continued backing despite the controversy, acknowledging their patience and generosity towards him.

The 26-year-old further praised his teammates for standing by him throughout the difficult period, saying their support had helped him as he worked to regain his best form.

Alvarez, who joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024, also revealed that he had been feeling better physically and improving his performances on the pitch in recent matches.

The Argentine forward said his priority was to contribute to the team’s success and compete for honours, expressing confidence that hard work and humility would help him rebuild his relationship with the supporters.

His recent goals and public apology could mark an important step towards putting the summer controversy behind him as he looks to maintain his form under Diego Simeone.
