Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat has announced that he is temporarily making himself unavailable for national team selection.
The midfielder said he will not represent Morocco while Mohamed Ouahbi remains head coach, but stressed that his decision does not amount to retirement from international football.
Amrabat announced the decision in a detailed post on Instagram, shortly before Morocco’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Ajax player described the decision as a difficult one but chose not to disclose the specific reasons behind his decision, saying he wanted to respect the national team and those involved.
“This has been a very difficult decision, but I do not feel able to continue representing the national team under the current head coach,” Amrabat said in an Instagram post.
“I am therefore making myself unavailable for selection while he remains in charge.
“Out of respect for the national team and everyone involved, I prefer to keep the reasons behind this decision private.
“I want to be clear: I am not retiring from international football, and I am not closing the door on representing Morocco again.”
The announcement follows reports of tensions and reduced playing time for Amrabat under Ouahbi, who took charge of the Moroccan team in March 2026.
The coach has reportedly favoured younger midfield options, contributing to Amrabat’s decision to step away from the squad for the time being.
