Aston Villa lift Europa League title for first silverware since 1996

Aston Villa secured the Europa League title after beating Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul, thanks to brilliant strikes from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendia, along with a goal from Morgan Rogers, earning the club their first major trophy since winning the League Cup in 1996.

The victory also marks Villa’s first European honour since claiming the European Cup in 1982, further cementing manager Unai Emery and his squad in the club’s history.

It has been yet another impressive campaign for Villa. Since arriving in 2022, Emery has worked under financial constraints but has still guided the club to a top-five Premier League finish while also delivering silverware.

The achievement represents the Spaniard’s fifth Europa League success, having previously lifted the trophy three consecutive times with Sevilla between 2013 and 2016, and later with Villarreal in 2019.

Villa’s journey to the final saw them overcome Lille, Bologna, and Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest in the knockout rounds before defeating Freiburg in the final.

John McGinn and Ollie Watkins remain the Villans’ leading scorers in the tournament with five goals each. Buendia has contributed four goals and six assists across 12 matches, with his strike in the final arriving during his 150th appearance for the club.

During Emery’s first complete season at the helm, he led Villa into the Champions League with a fourth-place finish, before this season’s Europa League qualification came after ending the 2024/25 campaign in sixth place.

Villa are now set to compete in the Champions League once again in the 2026/27 season.

Following their Europa League success, a sixth-place Premier League finish may still be enough for Champions League qualification if Villa end the season in fifth, potentially allowing Bournemouth or Brighton to claim a spot in Europe’s elite competition.
