Barcelona won’t wait forever for Julian Alvarez deal – Laporta

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has said the club will pursue alternative transfer targets if it fails to reach an agreement with Atletico Madrid for striker Julian Alvarez.

Alvarez, who has reportedly expressed a desire to leave Atletico Madrid this summer after scoring 49 goals in 106 appearances, has attracted interest from Barcelona, who have already submitted a bid for the Argentina international.

The 26-year-old has registered 66 goal involvements since joining Atletico, more than any other player at the club during that period. Real Madrid reportedly had a €150m bid rejected for the forward, while Arsenal are also said to be monitoring his situation.

Speaking to Cadena SER, Laporta said Barcelona’s offer would not remain on the table indefinitely.

“Atletico Madrid already knows we’ve made a significant offer for Julian. A very significant one.

“If they’re willing to accept it, fantastic. However, it won’t be an open-ended offer.

“There will come a time when we have to decide whether to maintain the offer or not, and it will depend on how these next two weeks of July unfold. We’ve approached this with institutional respect.

“The player has spoken out, and the matter is still open. We’ll see what Atletico says. It’s very clear that the player wants a change of scenery.

“We’ll see how the Julian situation develops; if it’s not certain, there are alternatives.”

Barcelona have already strengthened their squad with the signing of Anthony Gordon, while Karim Adeyemi is reportedly close to completing a move to Camp Nou.

The Catalan club begin the defence of their La Liga title away to Elche on August 23 before hosting Athletic Club in their first home game of the 2026/27 season.
