Barcelona’s Yamal wins LaLiga player of the year award

Lamine Yamal has been named LaLiga Player of the Season after delivering another outstanding campaign for FC Barcelona.

The teenage winger was instrumental in Barcelona’s successful 2025-26 league campaign under Hansi Flick, helping the club secure its 29th LaLiga title ahead of rivals Real Madrid.

Yamal registered 27 goal contributions during the league season, scoring 16 goals and providing 11 assists in 28 appearances. Only Kylian Mbappé recorded more goal involvements, finishing with 30.

The 18-year-old also led the division in completed dribbles with 133. In chance creation, only Luis Milla, Edu Expósito and Pablo Fornals produced more chances than his tally of 72.

Praising the youngster, Barcelona stated: “He is the proverbial headache for opponent defences, who have to make a real effort to try to stop the Blaugrana’s attacking threats.

“Beyond the intangibles, the young Catalan scored 16 goals and provided 11 assists, with no other LaLiga player providing that many passes leading to goals.”

Yamal becomes the fourth Barcelona player to receive the award since its introduction in the 2008-09 season, joining Lionel Messi, Marc-André ter Stegen and Raphinha.

Although he missed Barcelona’s final six league matches due to a hamstring injury, he is expected to be available for Spain national football team at this summer’s World Cup.

Yamal was not the only Barcelona figure recognised by LaLiga. Flick was named Manager of the Year for the second successive season after guiding the club to another league triumph.

The 61-year-old recently signed a contract extension that will keep him at Barcelona until June 2028 as he seeks further success with the club.

Among Barcelona managers who have overseen at least five league matches, only Tito Vilanova and Pep Guardiola boast a higher average points-per-game record in LaLiga than Flick’s 2.43.

In Barcelona’s history, only two coaches have won three consecutive LaLiga titles. Guardiola achieved the feat between 2008-09 and 2010-11, while Johan Cruyff led the club to four straight league crowns from 1990-91 to 1993-94.
