Manchester United and Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has spoken highly of Cristiano Ronaldo, describing the veteran forward as the biggest icon in the history of the Portuguese national team and the country.
Fernandes disclosed that he recently spoke with Ronaldo and took the opportunity to reaffirm the immense respect he has for his former Portugal teammate.
In a post on X on Saturday, football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano quoted Fernandes as saying, “I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo and told him that he is and will always remain the greatest icon of our national team and our country.”
Fernandes also dismissed suggestions of a split within the Portuguese camp, insisting that the players remain united.
“Our national team is united, not divided,” Fernandes added.
He further stated that issues concerning the team should be handled internally and resolved in a manner that works for everyone involved.
“Matters must be resolved internally and conclude well for both parties,” he said.
Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus also stressed Ronaldo’s importance, saying the five-time Ballon d’Or winner represents more than just the national team.
“I can’t ignore Cristiano Ronaldo topic. Cris is a symbol of the Portuguese national team. He is a symbol of Portugal. Let that be absolutely clear,” Jesus said.
Jesus declined to elaborate further, noting that he would have more opportunity to discuss the matter after the match.
“After the game, answering the question, there will be plenty of time to talk about that,” he added.
