Buffon supports Kayode’s decision to switch to Italy

Former Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has advised the Italian national team to consider inviting Michael Kayode to the senior squad before the defender decides to commit his international future to Nigeria’s national team, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 21-year-old Brentford defender has been impressive in the Premier League this season, featuring in 28 matches as the club continues its solid run in the 2025–26 campaign.

Kayode’s energetic performances at right-back and right wing-back, along with his strength and trademark long throw-ins, have attracted significant attention.

Born in Borgomanero in Italy’s Novara province to Nigerian parents, the defender is eligible to play for both Italy and Nigeria at the senior level.

He has already represented Italy at youth level, playing for the country’s U-18, U-19 and U-21 teams, but he is yet to earn a call-up to the senior squad.

With the March international window approaching and Italy still seeking qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup through the European play-offs, Buffon believes the team should act quickly to secure Kayode’s commitment.

“Another one who’s doing well is Kayode,” Buffon said, according to Football Italia.

The legendary goalkeeper, who helped Italy win the 2006 FIFA World Cup, also expressed confidence that current Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso would be bold enough to give opportunities to young players like the Brentford defender.

“If there’s something he doesn’t lack, it’s courage,” Buffon said.

“Regardless of age, the national team is for those who deserve it. Of course, you need a certain core group; you get nowhere without one.

“You have to know how to use young players without burdening them with responsibilities. You must take fearlessness from young players.”

Kayode has also acknowledged the possibility of representing either country but said his main focus for now is performing well for Brentford F.C..

“For every player, it’s a dream to be in the national team, especially now because of the qualifications for the World Cup. I really hope we qualify,” he told The Athletic.

“It’s important to do very well at the club because if you don’t do well at your club, you don’t get a call-up. So I just think about Brentford, and if I get the opportunity with Italy, that’s it.

“I’m happy that the Nigerian people are happy for me. The opportunity to play for both is amazing.”
