Benjamin Sesko came off the bench to net another late goal for Manchester United, helping them strengthen their push for a top-four finish with a 3–1 victory over Aston Villa.

Before kick-off at Old Trafford, the sides were level on points in the Premier League table, separated only by goal difference. However, goals from Matheus Cunha and Sesko extended United’s advantage to three points.

United dominated the opening half. Amad Diallo saw his header tipped away by Emiliano Martinez, while Diogo Dalot later missed a huge chance by firing over the crossbar.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 53rd minute when Bruno Fernandes’ corner was cleverly redirected off the far post by Casemiro, who had slipped past Villa’s defence.

Ross Barkley — making his 200th Premier League start equalised for the visitors 11 minutes later, curling a shot into the bottom-right corner as an offside Amadou Onana moved aside just in time.

Villa were unable to build on that moment. United struck again on a rapid counter-attack in the 71st minute, with Cunha finishing Fernandes’ precise throughball beyond Martinez.

Substitute Sesko later capitalised on Lamare Bogarde’s attempted clearance, spinning inside the box to shoot, with a heavy deflection off Tyrone Mings sending the ball into the net.

Data Debrief: Fernandes stars to reach century

Although he did not score, Fernandes once again delivered an outstanding performance for United.

He recorded two assists, bringing his Premier League total this season to 16 — surpassing David Beckham’s record of 15 from the 1999-00 campaign as the club’s highest in a single league season.

It also marked Fernandes’ 100th assist in all competitions for United. He became the fourth player in the Premier League era to reach that milestone for the club, joining Ryan Giggs (249), Wayne Rooney (127), and Beckham (115).

Meanwhile, Michael Carrick has collected 22 points from nine Premier League matches (W7 D1 L1), the most of any side since his run began on January 17. Aston Villa, on the other hand, have now suffered three straight top-flight defeats for the first time since February 2023.
