Chelle bags new contract, gets expanded Super Eagles role

The chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has announced that a new agreement has been concluded between the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle.

Dikko made the disclosure on Tuesday in Abuja after a meeting with Ibrahim Gusau, the NFF president, and other federation officials.

Chelle’s current two-year contract is set to expire at the end of 2026, with discussions over a renewal ongoing for some time.

According to Dikko, the revised arrangement will come with improved pay for the Franco-Malian coach, alongside additional responsibilities involving the men’s U-23 national team.

He also noted that Chelle’s technical assistants will now be officially paid by the NFF, unlike the previous setup where the coach was reportedly responsible for their wages.

“I can confirm to you that we have reached a new term with the coach. We are going to increase his money and also take care of his assistants who are helping him. nd there are other benchmarks that we have put on the table, and I’m sure the coach will be very excited about it,” Dikko said.

“We have also discussed how we can build for the future. In that aspect, we also agree with the coach and the NFF that the coach should take care of the U-23 national team.”

Chelle, who was appointed in 2025, guided the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Beyond his senior team duties, he will also oversee the U-23 side’s quest to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, a competition Nigeria has not featured in since Rio 2016.
