Chelsea F.C. captain Reece James has committed his long-term future to the club after signing a contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032. A lifelong supporter of the Blues, James joined the club’s academy at the age of six and has since grown into one of its most important figures.
After rising through the Cobham Academy system, James made his Under-18 debut while still in school and played a central role in the side that secured a historic Treble.
He agreed to his first professional contract in March 2017 and soon stood out in Chelsea’s youth ranks, ending the season as Academy Player of the Season and captaining a team that won the Youth Cup.
Confirming the agreement in a statement obtained from Pride of London’s X handle on Friday, Chelsea Sporting Directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart described James as a leader who reflects the club’s identity and principles.
“He knows what it means to wear this badge, and having committed his long-term future to Chelsea, we’re excited to continue this journey with him,” they said.
Following an impressive loan spell at Wigan Athletic F.C.—where he earned both Player of the Season and Players’ Player awards—James secured a place in Chelsea’s first team ahead of the 2019/20 season.
He scored on his debut during a League Cup victory over Grimsby Town F.C. and soon built a reputation for delivering in major European fixtures, including a memorable goal against AFC Ajax in the UEFA Champions League.
In recent seasons, James has cemented his status as a regular starter and an influential leader both on and off the pitch. He has made more than 200 appearances for the club, won five major trophies—including the 2021 UEFA Champions League and two FIFA Club World Cup titles—and has worn the captain’s armband for the Blues more than 50 times.
Before the 2023/24 season, he was appointed captain of the men’s team and has since guided them to triumph in the UEFA Europa Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Speaking about his extension, James said: “I am over the moon to have extended my contract. Chelsea means so much to me. I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes. I’m excited for the future under this ownership, Sporting Directors, Coach, and all the staff, and hopefully we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years.”
Now 26, James continues to show his versatility, technical ability, and leadership qualities. Having already spent two decades with the club, he looks set to continue shaping the next phase of his journey with Chelsea.
