Club World Cup: Chelsea, Man City eye £97m prize money

English Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester City could each earn up to £97 million in prize money from this year’s Club World Cup.

This prize could be the largest ever awarded in club football over a seven-game format, should either team win all their group-stage matches and go on to win the tournament. Both Chelsea and Manchester City qualified for the competition due to their recent Champions League victories in 2021 and 2023, respectively.

FIFA had previously revealed the total prize fund of £775 million for the event, which runs from June 14 to July 13. However, FIFA has now outlined how the prize money will be distributed among the 32 participating teams.

Each team will receive a share of £407 million just for participating, with an additional £368 million distributed based on performance throughout the tournament.

The winner of this year’s expanded Club World Cup, which will be held in the United States, will take home up to £97 million, FIFA announced on Wednesday.

A team will earn £1.5 million for each group-stage win, £5.8 million for reaching the last 16, £10.2 million for reaching the quarter-finals, £16.3 million for the semi-finals, and £31 million for winning the final.

The expanded Club World Cup will take place from June 15 to July 13 in the United States. Once an annual event with seven teams, it will now feature 32 clubs and be held every four years.

Each country can send only two clubs, so while 2022 Champions League finalists Liverpool are not included, the recent Champions League winners, Chelsea (2021) and Manchester City (2023), will participate.

Other European teams have qualified through a UEFA ranking system based on clubs’ performances over the last four seasons.
