Colombia finished top of Group K after playing out an entertaining goalless draw with Portugal in their final World Cup group match.
Match Report
Colombia claimed first place in Group K despite being held to a 0-0 stalemate by Portugal in a lively encounter filled with opportunities at both ends.
The South Americans thought they had snatched a dramatic winner in stoppage time, but Davinson Sanchez’s effort was ruled out for a marginal offside decision.
The game burst into life early on. Jhon Arias headed over the crossbar, while Ruben Neves dragged an effort wide within the opening four minutes. Jhon Cordoba then shrugged off Bruno Fernandes before forcing Diogo Costa into an excellent save, and Arias was later denied on the goal line by Neves.
Cristiano Ronaldo struggled to make a significant impact in the first half, sending a harmless long-range free-kick straight at Camilo Vargas. Fernandes came closest for Portugal, drawing a good stop from Vargas before Ronaldo’s overhead kick was blocked from the rebound. Joao Felix also fired over while stretching to meet a cross.
Colombia ended the first half strongly, with Costa reacting quickly to keep out James Rodriguez’s low strike.
After the restart, Colombia continued to apply pressure. Costa produced another important save to deny Jefferson Lerma’s powerful effort from distance, while Richard Rios, Arias, and Gustavo Puerta all missed opportunities as James orchestrated play from midfield.
Luis Suarez later sent a shot over the bar, and Sanchez looked to have secured victory in the 91st minute when he headed home Juan Fernando Quintero’s cross. However, VAR ruled the goal out for a narrow offside, with Sanchez’s toe beyond Rafael Leao.
Leao nearly punished Colombia moments later but dragged his effort wide from a tight angle.
Colombia Fail to Capitalise on Dominance
Although a draw was enough to guarantee top spot, Colombia will feel they missed the chance to take maximum points after controlling large spells of the contest.
Their two attempts in the opening two minutes marked their earliest shots in a World Cup game this century. They registered 12 efforts in the first half alone, more than Portugal had allowed in either of their previous group matches.
The match remained entertaining throughout, with a combined expected goals (xG) tally of 1.38 at the interval—the highest first-half figure for any goalless game at the 2026 World Cup.
Ronaldo endured a quiet outing, recording only three shots and 35 touches. Following his brace against Uzbekistan, he was unable to celebrate his 25th World Cup appearance with another goal.
James Rodriguez, meanwhile, became Colombia’s most-capped World Cup player with 11 appearances. Although he did not contribute directly to a goal, he was one of his side’s standout performers, creating five chances and completing a game-high 43 passes in the attacking third.
As Group K winners, Colombia will face Ghana in the round of 32 on July 3, while Portugal take on Croatia, with a possible meeting against Spain awaiting them in the next round.
