Edo Queens have been crowned WAFU-B Women’s Champions League champions after a dramatic 4-1 penalty shootout victory over Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies in Saturday’s final in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The Nigerian champions twice came from behind to force a 2-2 draw after regulation time before keeping their composure in the decisive shootout to claim the regional title.
The victory also secured Edo Queens a place in the upcoming CAF Women’s Champions League finals.
Ampem Darkoa made a flying start, taking the lead just two minutes into the match through Beline Nyarkoh.
Edo Queens responded almost immediately, with Doosuur Anastasia Atume equalising two minutes later to make it 1-1.
The score remained unchanged for most of the encounter before Nyarkoh restored Ampem Darkoa’s lead in the 74th minute with her second goal of the night.
Just when the Ghanaian champions appeared set to secure the trophy, Edo Queens produced a late comeback.
Oluebube Umejiaku struck in the 94th minute to make it 2-2 and force the final into a penalty shootout.
Edo Queens proved more composed from the spot, converting four of their penalties, while Ampem Darkoa scored only one.
The 4-1 shootout victory sealed the WAFU-B title for Edo Queens and booked their place in the next CAF Women’s Champions League finals.
