English FA stands by Tuchel after World cup semi-final defeat

The Football Association has reiterated its confidence in England manager Thomas Tuchel following the Three Lions’ 2-1 loss to Argentina in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup.

England’s hopes of reaching a first men’s World Cup final since 1966 were dashed after surrendering an early lead, with Argentina scoring twice late in the game to set up a title clash with Spain.

Despite criticism over Tuchel’s tactical decisions, particularly his substitutions, FA officials are understood to remain fully committed to the German coach, who is expected to stay in charge until the 2028 European Championship.

Tuchel was appointed England manager in January 2025 and later agreed to a contract extension in February after initially signing an 18-month deal.

Speaking after the defeat, FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham praised the squad and coaching crew for their commitment throughout the tournament.

He said, “It is heartbreaking to be so close. The players and Thomas gave it everything today and the squad, coaches and staff could not have worked harder during the tournament.

“I would like to thank them all, and also give my heartfelt thanks to our wonderful fans here in the USA and at home.”

England will now meet France in Saturday’s third-place playoff as they look to end the tournament on a positive note.

Tuchel also made it clear that his attention has already shifted towards Euro 2028, which England will co-host with Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

“We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to that even though right now it’s difficult to look that far ahead.

“Of course, it’s a semi-final; a lot of big football nations are eliminated before the semi-final, so it is an achievement.

“No-one wants to hear that at the moment; me neither because we demand the most of ourselves. That’s just the nature of being competitive.”

The FA believes England’s journey to the last four represents progress under Tuchel and sees it as a platform to build on ahead of Euro 2028.
