Premier League Match-week 5: Results, records and major talking points
The fifth match-week of the 2026/27 Premier League season delivered plenty of drama, with Manchester City maintaining their perfect start, Arsenal suffering a heavy defeat, Coventry City recording a landmark victory and Sunderland producing a memorable individual performance.
Manchester City 5-3 Sunderland
Manchester City remained perfect at the top of the table after an eight-goal thriller against Sunderland.
Enzo Fernández, Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo scored for City, with Semenyo netting twice before Erling Haaland completed the victory late on. Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey scored a hat-trick.
Brobbey’s three goals included a 33-minute brace in the first half, which the Premier League noted was the earliest time a Sunderland player had scored twice in a league match since Darren Bent in 2010.
The result preserved City’s 100 per cent league record and opened a three-point gap at the top after Arsenal’s defeat at Brighton.
Brighton 3-0 Arsenal
Arsenal endured one of the weekend’s biggest setbacks as Brighton recorded a 3-0 victory.
Pascal Groß, Charalampos Kostoulas and Carlos Andrés were on target for Brighton, leaving Arsenal without a goal in the match.
The result allowed Manchester City to extend their advantage at the top of the table to three points.
Brentford 3-0 Chelsea
Brentford produced a notable result on Friday by beating Chelsea 3-0.
Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho scored after the break to hand Brentford their first home league victory over Chelsea since 1938.
The defeat also extended Chelsea’s run without a Premier League clean sheet to 21 matches.
Coventry City End 25-Year Wait
Coventry City secured their first Premier League victory in 25 years with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
Jay Dasilva scored the decisive goal in the 55th minute after controlling a long pass from goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.
Forest thought they had equalised late on through Igor Jesus, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review.
The victory was Coventry’s first in the Premier League since their previous spell in the division ended with relegation in 2001.
Liverpool Edge Bournemouth
Liverpool returned to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 victory over Bournemouth.
Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the match in the second half, with Cody Gakpo providing the assist.
Gakpo has now created all four of Isak’s goals this season, according to the match report, as Liverpool maintained their unbeaten start across all competitions.
Manchester United rescue point
Manchester United came from behind to draw 1-1 with Fulham.
Fulham took the lead through a Lisandro Martínez own goal before Matheus Cunha scored a late equaliser for United.
The point prevented United from suffering a third consecutive defeat.
Tottenham fall to bottom
Tottenham Hotspur suffered another setback, losing 3-2 at home to Aston Villa.
The result left Spurs at the bottom of the Premier League table, their lowest position in the competition since 2009.
