Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher will not be declared bankrupt after settling his outstanding tax debt with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
According to the BBC, insolvency judge Nicholas Briggs dismissed a bankruptcy petition against the 48-year-old at the Insolvency and Companies Court on Tuesday after HMRC confirmed that the debt had been paid.
The petition was filed in August, with the tax authority’s representative, Kevin Hassan, informing the court in London that Carragher had cleared the outstanding bill.
Although the exact amount was not disclosed during the hearing, the debt had previously been estimated at between £700,000 and £800,000.
Carragher spent his entire professional playing career at Liverpool, where he helped the club win the UEFA Champions League in 2005.
He retired from professional football in 2013 after making 737 appearances for the Premier League side.
Since hanging up his boots, Carragher has established himself as a prominent football pundit, regularly working with Sky Sports and CBS Sports.
