Ex-Man City midfielder Fernandinho retires from football at 40

Former Manchester City and Brazil midfielder Fernandinho has confirmed that he is retiring from professional football.

At 40, he appeared in a farewell charity game at Arena da Baixada, following his final stint in 2024 with Athletico Paranaense—the club where his career first began.

Fernandinho secured a move to Manchester City after helping Shakhtar Donetsk win six league championships and the 2009 UEFA Cup (now the Europa League).

During his spell in England, he captured five Premier League titles and six EFL Cups.

He ranks eighth in Manchester City’s all-time Premier League appearance list with 264 games, scoring 20 goals and providing 19 assists, and also sits fifth in interceptions for the club with 380.

His only trophy with Brazil was the 2019 Copa America, though he featured in 10 World Cup matches and scored once.

Speaking after the charity match, Fernandinho told GeGlobo: “I already got tired running for 30 minutes today.

“In football, there’s nothing that motivates me anymore. Everything I could enjoy, I enjoyed. Now, it’s time to enjoy time with the family.”
