Ex-Spurs, Fulham player wastes three penalties in embarrassing outing

Former Carlos Vinícius endured a shocking evening after missing three penalties within six minutes during a Copa Sudamericana clash on Wednesday.

The former Tottenham and Fulham striker, now at Brazilian club Grêmio, was left embarrassed in the match against Chilean side Palestino and goalkeeper Sebastián Pérez.

Vinícius, 31, previously scored eight goals in 52 appearances for Fulham before completing a permanent move to Grêmio in the summer of 2025. He also spent a loan spell at Tottenham, where he netted 10 goals in all competitions, including one Premier League strike against Aston Villa.

He has scored 13 goals across all competitions for Grêmio this season but endured a disastrous outing from the penalty spot.

His first penalty in the 11th minute was saved by Pérez, but it was retaken after the goalkeeper was ruled to have stepped off his line too early.

On his second attempt in the 14th minute, Pérez again denied him, this time pushing the ball onto the post.

With another retake awarded for the same infringement, Vinícius stepped up for a third time but slipped as he struck the ball down the middle, allowing Pérez to make a save with his feet.

The miss proved costly as Grêmio were held to a 0-0 draw in their Group F encounter.

To make matters worse, Vinícius later had a goal ruled out by VAR in the 78th minute and was also booked late in the game, rounding off a frustrating night for the Brazilian forward.
