Peter Rufai, former Super Eagles goalkeeper, has died at the age of 61 after an illness.
The Super Eagles confirmed his passing in a tribute posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, stating:
“We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion. Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”
Nicknamed Dodomayana, Rufai was a key member of the Nigerian team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He also featured in the country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance that same year.
Regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, Rufai earned 65 caps for the national team.
