FG praises Super Eagles’ resilience after 2025 AFCON  semi-final exit

The federal government has lauded the Super Eagles for their determination and fighting spirit at the tournament, despite their semi-final defeat.

On Wednesday, Nigeria’s Super Eagles were edged out by the Atlas Lions of Morocco on penalties, denying them a place in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The commendation was conveyed by Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation, in a statement issued on Thursday.

Idris said the team displayed strong character, unity and resilience throughout the competition—qualities he noted are of great significance to the country.

According to the minister, the players’ dedication and commitment during the tournament earned them admiration and appreciation from Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.

“Thank you for giving your all and for representing Nigeria with pride and dignity,” Idris said.

“Even in defeat, you showed character, teamwork, and resilience, and those qualities matter deeply to the nation you represent.

“Football has its highs and lows, but your effort, commitment, and fighting spirit throughout this tournament have earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad.”

He added that the team’s display served as a reminder of the values attached to wearing the national jersey.

“You reminded us that wearing the green and white is about courage, unity, and never giving up,” he said.

“Hold your heads high, learn from this experience, stay united, and return stronger.

“Nigeria remains proud of you and grateful for the joy and hope you gave us during this competition.”

Meanwhile, Abdul Samad Rabiu, chairman of BUA Group, has confirmed he will still donate $500,000 to the Super Eagles despite their semi-final loss to Morocco.

The businessman had earlier pledged the donation if Nigeria defeated Morocco in the semi-final.

The Super Eagles will now face Egypt in the AFCON third-place match on Saturday.
