Gov Eno praises Troost-Ekong’s remarkable career after international retirement

The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, has extended heartfelt commendations to Super Eagles captain and defender William Troost-Ekong, following his announcement of retirement from international football on Tuesday.

On Friday, 5 December 2025, Governor Umo Eno lauded Troost-Ekong’s “illustrious and exemplary” career, emphasising his consistent dedication, discipline, and exceptional leadership both on and off the field.

Speaking through his Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, the governor applauded Troost-Ekong for his years of distinguished service to Nigeria and described him as a source of pride and inspiration to millions of football lovers around the world.

AFCON Heroics and Lasting Legacy

Troost-Ekong captained the Super Eagles during the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where the team secured the silver medal.
Throughout the competition — popularly called Côte Divine 2023 — he stood out as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and earned the Top Scoring Defender Award after scoring three goals. Before stepping away from the international scene, he represented Nigeria 80 times.

On behalf of my family and the people of our dear state, I sincerely congratulate our son, William Troost-Ekong, who has been a worthy ambassador of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria, both as a player and as captain of the Super Eagles,” Governor Umo Eno said through Paul Bassey.

Club Career and What Lies Ahead

Governor Umo Eno also extended his best wishes to Troost-Ekong for continued success at his current club, Al-Kholood in the Saudi Pro League, as well as in all future pursuits.

The 32-year-old defender currently plays for Al-Kholood SC. His football journey began in the youth ranks of Fulham and later Tottenham Hotspur, before launching his professional career in the Netherlands with FC Groningen and FC Dordrecht.

Over the years, Troost-Ekong featured for KAA Gent, Norwegian club FK Haugesund, Turkish side Bursaspor, and Serie A outfit Udinese. He also had notable stints at Watford in the English Championship and Salernitana in Italy before moving to Saudi Arabia.

His retirement marks the end of a celebrated chapter in Nigerian football—but his legacy continues to inspire.
