Brazilian star Bruno Guimaraes came off the bench to complete Arsenal’s comeback as the Premier League champions returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Leeds United.
After suffering a heavy defeat to Brighton before the international break, Arsenal struggled to impose themselves during the opening hour at the Emirates Stadium, where James Justin gave Leeds the lead.
However, the Gunners mounted an impressive response, with Riccardo Calafiori and Guimaraes finding the net within eight minutes to secure all three points.
Arsenal applied early pressure but created few clear-cut opportunities, with Bukayo Saka firing at James Trafford from an offside position. Leeds produced the first genuine threat when Anton Stach’s effort was accidentally blocked by his teammate, Jayden Bogle.
David Raya was forced to retreat quickly to prevent Ethan Ampadu’s looping header from finding the net, before Gabriel Gudmundsson tested the Arsenal goalkeeper from close range just before half-time.
Leeds continued to threaten after the restart, with Ao Tanaka drawing a save from Raya. Their persistence paid off in the 55th minute when Justin powerfully converted Gudmundsson’s cross to put the visitors ahead.
Arsenal responded seven minutes later as Calafiori’s volley, despite lacking significant power, slipped beyond Trafford to restore parity.
The Italian subsequently fired wide as the hosts increased their attacking intensity. However, Guimaraes, who was among three substitutes introduced after Arsenal’s equaliser, proved decisive by finishing off a well-worked move initiated by Declan Rice.
Martin Odegaard missed a golden opportunity from close range, while Viktor Gyokeres failed to punish another mistake by Trafford. Despite those missed chances, Leeds could not find a late equaliser to preserve their unbeaten start to the league campaign.
A tale of two halves
Arsenal were sluggish and lacked urgency before the interval, failing to score in the first half of a Premier League meeting with Leeds for the first time since November 2020. It was also the first time they had failed to score in the opening half of a home league match against the Whites since January 1998.
The statistics further highlighted Arsenal’s first-half struggles, as they faced seven shots compared to the four they managed themselves. It was only the second time since the beginning of last season that they had conceded more attempts than they produced in a home league fixture.
After creating chances worth just 0.41 expected goals (xG) in the first half, Arsenal improved considerably following Leeds’ opener.
The Gunners registered nine shots, five of which were on target, and accumulated 2.17 xG after the break. Leeds, meanwhile, recorded 0.68 xG across the entire match.
Calafiori’s equaliser proved pivotal in changing the momentum. Although Trafford could have handled the effort better, the Italian defender has now recorded three goal involvements in the Premier League this season, matching his total from 26 appearances in the previous campaign.
Guimaraes ultimately delivered the winning moment. Nine of his last 10 league goals have either given his team the lead, accounting for seven, or brought them level, accounting for two.
His ability to deliver in crucial moments once again proved valuable, with his introduction from the bench making the difference for Arsenal.
Leeds put up a strong fight and were arguably the better side for the first hour, but their wait for an away league victory against Arsenal continues, having last achieved the feat in May 2003.
