Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has paid tribute to Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi following the striker’s permanent transfer to Coventry City.
Awoniyi ended his four-year spell with Nottingham Forest on Monday after completing his move to Frank Lampard’s Coventry City side.
The Nigerian striker joined Forest from Bundesliga club Union Berlin in 2022 and played an important role in helping the club retain their Premier League status during his first season.
He scored 11 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions during that campaign and went on to register 23 goals in 103 appearances for Forest.
Marinakis praises Awoniyi’s contribution
Although Awoniyi has now left the club, Marinakis stressed that the striker’s contribution to Nottingham Forest will remain memorable, describing him as an important figure in the club’s recent history.
“Taiwo will always have a special place in the history of Nottingham Forest. He has been one of the defining figures in our journey and given our supporters moments of great joy that will never be forgotten,” he told the club’s official website.
Marinakis also praised the 28-year-old for the resilience and determination he displayed throughout his time at the club.
“Throughout his time with us, Taiwo has shown great strength, determination and positivity, overcoming great challenges along the way.
“He embraced this Club from the first day and his passion and character are why he is so loved by everyone connected to Nottingham Forest.
“We thank Taiwo for everything he has given to this Club. He leaves with our gratitude, our respect and our very best wishes for the future. He will always be part of the Forest family and will always be welcomed home.”
