Isak’s late penalty rescues point for Newcastle in stalemate with Brighton

Alexander Isak converted a late penalty to earn Newcastle United a 1-1 draw against Brighton in Sunday’s Premier League encounter.

Earlier in the match, Yankuba Minteh struck against his former team, opening the scoring in the 28th minute with a shot that took a deflection off Dan Burn during an otherwise subdued first half at the Amex Stadium.

Newcastle were later denied two penalties in the second half after VAR reviews. The first was overturned as Tariq Lamptey’s challenge on Anthony Gordon was found to have occurred outside the box, while the second was dismissed when Joe Willock was judged to have simulated contact under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke.

Ultimately, the third penalty call went Newcastle’s way, dealing a tough blow to Brighton, who now trail Brentford and Bournemouth in the race for European qualification.

The result leaves both sides with little progress in their European pursuits—Brighton remain in 10th place, while Newcastle hold onto fourth.
