Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya returns to the Octagon on Sunday in what is being widely described as a decisive redemption bout, as he takes on rising contender Joe Pyfer in the headline event of UFC Fight Night 271 at the Climate Pledge Arena.
Adesanya (24-5-0), once the dominant force in the middleweight division, heads into the contest on a three-fight losing streak following defeats to Sean Strickland, Dricus du Plessis, and most recently Nassourdine Imavov, who knocked him out in February 2025.
Now ranked No. 4, the 36-year-old faces mounting pressure to prove he still belongs among the sport’s elite.
“I think the last guy who put it on the line, regardless, called out the best, was me,” Adesanya said. “This game is slow and just stuck without me. That’s one thing people didn’t appreciate — how active I was and how much I gave to the game while I was holding the belt.”
Standing opposite him is 29-year-old Pyfer (15-3-0), currently ranked No. 14 and riding a three-fight winning streak, including notable victories over Abusupiyan Magomedov and Kelvin Gastelum.
For Pyfer, the bout represents a major opportunity to break into the top tier, while for Adesanya, it is widely viewed as a defining moment in his career.
The co-main event will see a women’s flyweight rematch between former champion Alexa Grasso and in-form contender Maycee Barber, who has recorded seven consecutive wins since their last meeting in 2021.
Adesanya will be aiming to silence critics and reassert his status in the division, with victory potentially setting up a final run at the title, while defeat could mark the decline of the “Stylebender” era.
