Iwobi gets red as Nigeria draw Jordan in friendly match

The Super Eagles of Nigeria played out a 2-2 draw with Jordan in their second final match of the invitational tourney in Turkey.

Goals for Moses Simon and Emmanuel Fernandez were not good enough for victory against a resilient Jordanian team at the Mardan Titanic Sports Complex in Antalya on Tuesday.

Eric Chelle, Eagles head coach, made six changes to the team that defeated Iran 2-1 on Friday.

Injured Maduka Okoye was replaced by Francis Uzoho in goal, and Fernandez made his full debut in place of Semi Ajayi, who is also battling a knock.

Bruno Onyemaechi had been excused from the camp following the birth of his first child, and Zaidu Sanusi entered the team. Raphael Onyedika and Frank Onyeka came in for Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi in midfield, while Yira Sor was handed his debut for the team.

The rejig took a toll on the team in the first few minutes of the game, and Jordan raced ahead in the 17th minute. Musa Al-Taamari rifled home a free kick from 20 yards out.

Five minutes later, Nigeria levelled. Simon struck a beautiful half-volley down into the corner on his 97th appearance for the Eagles.

Four minutes for halftime, the Eagles were ahead. Fernandez connected with an Osayi-Samuel cross at the far post. The centre-back coolly controlled the ball before slotting it into the net.

In the second half, Chelle threw on Iwobi, Ndidi, and Samuel Chuwueze to see out the game. Uzoho also picked up a knock and was replaced by Adebayo Adeleye.

But it was the Jordanians who scored the only goal in the second half. A few minutes from the end of the match, Iwobi lost his cool after he was fouled by Amer Jamous. The midfielder turned to his opponent and charged him aggressively. The field briefly became chaotic, with both benches emptying onto the pitch in boiling anger.

After the dust had settled, Iwobi was shown a red card on his 98th appearance for the Eagles.
