Late Poland equaliser denies Super Eagles victory in 2-2 friendly draw

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were held to a 2-2 draw by Poland after a stoppage-time goal from Przemyslaw Wisniewski in an international friendly played in Warsaw on Wednesday.

The Super Eagles appeared set for a second consecutive win over Poland after goals from Terem Moffi and substitute Paul Onuachu had given them the advantage.

However, with only seconds remaining, Wisniewski unleashed a long-range volley that beat goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and secured a late draw for the hosts.

Nigeria will next face 2026 World Cup-bound Portugal in another friendly on June 10.

For the encounter, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle named a starting XI featuring Maduka Okoye in goal, debutant Abdullahi Bewene, Igoh, Emmanuel Fernandez and Bruno Onyemaechi in defence. Wilfred Ndidi, Tochukwu Nnadi and Frank Onyeka operated in midfield, while Akor Adams, Moffi and Moses Simon led the attack.

Poland created the first clear chance of the match in the fourth minute, but Jakub Kaminski failed to direct his free header on target.

Three minutes later, Akor Adams nearly put through his own net from a Polish corner, but the ball drifted narrowly wide.

Robert Lewandowski had an opportunity in the 14th minute, but his effort from a set piece was comfortably gathered by Okoye.

Nigeria opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Moffi finished from close range after receiving a low cross from Moses Simon. The goal was checked by VAR before being confirmed.

Poland threatened again in the 28th minute, but Okoye was equal to the task, making a routine save.

Five minutes before the break, Tochukwu Nnadi tested the Polish goalkeeper with a curling effort that was pushed away for a corner.

The hosts levelled the score in first-half stoppage time through Kaylee Potulski, who capitalised on poor defending from a corner to score from close range.

At the start of the second half, Chelle introduced seven substitutes, bringing on Calvin Bassey, Philip Otele, Raphael Onyedika, Rafiu Durosinmi, Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi and Paul Onuachu.

Otele almost made an instant impact with a dangerous cross that was cleared away.

Lewandowski came close to giving Poland the lead in the 71st minute after intercepting a poor back pass from Zaidu Sanusi, but his weak effort was stopped by Okoye.

A minute later, Sanusi fired a powerful left-footed strike that the goalkeeper tipped away.

Nigeria restored their lead in the 77th minute when Onuachu converted from the penalty spot after a Polish defender handled the ball inside the area.

Okoye continued his impressive performance, making a brilliant close-range save from Lewandowski in the 82nd minute and another crucial stop early in added time.

But just when victory seemed certain, Wisniewski struck in the 95th minute with a superb long-range effort to earn Poland a 2-2 draw and deny the Super Eagles a winning finish.
