Poland captain Robert Lewandowski will be aiming to hit another personal milestone when the White-Reds welcome the Super Eagles to the Stadion PGE Narodowy in Warsaw for an international friendly on Wednesday.
The veteran forward has made 166 appearances for Poland and netted 89 goals. A strike against Nigeria would take him to 90 international goals, strengthening his position as the country’s all-time top scorer and bringing him a step closer to the 100-goal landmark.
Lewandowski earned his first senior cap for Poland on September 10, 2008.
The 37-year-old is expected to feature from the start after being limited to 45 minutes in Poland’s previous outing, a 2-0 loss to Ukraine.
Poland head coach Jan Urban has already indicated that he will rotate his squad, confirming that Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara will take over from Marcin Bułka in goal, while Piotr Zieliński is also in line to start.
Speaking in remarks published by Fakt, Urban said, “Expect numerous changes. There were many in the first match, and there will be many in the second. These are friendly matches, so when, if not now, should we try different things and give the players a chance?
“We made nine changes during the match against Ukraine. I watched other teams in friendly matches; they made 10 or 11 changes. That’s normal in such matches.”
The encounter at the 58,000-seat Stadion PGE Narodowy will mark only the second senior-level meeting between Poland and Nigeria.
Their previous clash came in March 2018 during preparations for the FIFA World Cup in Russia. Nigeria secured a 1-0 victory in Wrocław, with Victor Moses converting the decisive goal.
Lewandowski will be eager to lead Poland to a positive result and prevent another home defeat as the team continues its build-up for upcoming international competitions.
