Liverpool beat Chelsea to reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Liverpool advance to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after defeating Chelsea 6-5 in a dramatic penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw in normal time at Anfield on Wednesday.

Chelsea took the lead in the 38th minute when Morgan Rogers converted a penalty after Ryan Gravenberch brought down Moises Caicedo inside the box. However, the Blues’ advantage lasted only a few minutes, as Cody Gakpo levelled for Liverpool from the penalty spot after Wesley Fofana handled the ball from a corner.

Both teams pushed for a winner in the second half, with Liverpool goalkeeper Mike Penders producing crucial saves to deny Ronald Araujo and Bradley Barcola. At the other end, Giorgi Mamardashvili kept Liverpool in the contest by stopping Marco Palestra’s effort, while Levi Colwill made an important block to prevent Florian Wirtz from scoring.

With neither side able to find a winner, the tie proceeded to penalties. Both teams initially converted their attempts before Valentin Barco struck the post and Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas missed the opportunity to secure victory.

The shoot-out continued into sudden death, with former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson scoring despite the hostile reception from the Anfield crowd. Chelsea’s Emmanuel Emegha then missed his opportunity, leaving the contest finely balanced.

Joe Gomez stepped up and fired his penalty into the top-right corner, putting Liverpool in front. Fofana had the chance to keep Chelsea alive but sent his effort over the crossbar and into the Kop, handing Liverpool a 6-5 shoot-out victory.

The result sees Liverpool progress to the next round after eliminating Tottenham and Chelsea in successive Carabao Cup ties.

Gakpo also continued his impressive record in the competition, taking his tally to 11 EFL Cup goals since the start of the 2023-24 season, the highest of any player during that period.

For Chelsea, the defeat marks a painful exit, with Fofana’s missed penalty proving decisive in a contest that ultimately went down to the wire.
