Match Report
Mbappe’s treble, combined with two assists from Jude Bellingham and a goal from Vinicius Junior, helped Los Blancos move top of LaLiga after a commanding home display.
Madrid began brightly, with Mbappe and Vinicius creating opportunities for each other, only for Alex Remiro to deny them. At the opposite end, Thibaut Courtois produced an excellent save to keep out Mikel Oyarzabal during the opening half-hour.
Sergio Gomez came close to giving La Real the lead with a spectacular volley from the left side of the box, but Madrid broke the deadlock in the 40th minute. Federico Valverde found Mbappe inside the penalty area, and the French forward took a touch before firing into the top-left corner.
Real Sociedad restored parity just before the break when Luka Sucic reacted quickest to a rebound after Job Ochieng’s initial effort was blocked by Ibrahima Konate.
Madrid regained the advantage shortly after the hour mark. Mbappe exchanged passes with Bellingham before curling the ball beyond Remiro to make it 2-1.
Eight minutes later, the hosts extended their lead. Bellingham’s effort was blocked, but he immediately won possession from Luken Beitia before setting up Vinicius, who calmly finished into an empty net.
Mbappe completed his hat-trick late in the game, lifting the ball over Remiro after Vinicius produced a superb reverse pass to seal a memorable homecoming for Mourinho.
Madrid’s stars shine under Mourinho
Mourinho’s name echoed around the Bernabeu during the closing stages, reflecting the impressive display from his key players.
Mbappe became the first player to register a LaLiga hat-trick this season. His six goals for Madrid across all competitions since joining in 2024-25 are at least twice the tally of any other LaLiga player.
The Frenchman led Madrid for shots with eight and touches inside the box with 13. He has now scored seven goals against La Real, making them his favourite opponent in the competition.
Bellingham and Vinicius each played a direct role in two goals, while Bellingham also won a match-high nine duels from 14. Arda Guler created five chances, following the seven he produced in Madrid’s opening victory over Espanyol.
Madrid’s dominance was reflected in their 3.14 expected goals (xG), while Mourinho’s side limited La Real to just 0.57 as his unbeaten start to his second spell continued.
