Manchester United’s newest signing, Bryan Mbeumo, has named Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman among the top three African footballers currently, while leaving out Victor Osimhen.
The 25-year-old Cameroonian forward joined United following a five-year spell at Brentford, where he scored 20 goals and provided eight assists in 38 Premier League appearances last season.
In an interview with former England defender Rio Ferdinand, Mbeumo was asked to list Africa’s best current players. He chose Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman, and Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi.
“For now, Salah, Lookman, and Achraf Hakimi. He’s the best right-back in the world,” Mbeumo stated.
The former Brentford winger also revealed his all-time top three African players: Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o and Ivorian greats Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré.
“Of course, I looked up to Eto’o. He was a striker and a goalscorer, which was what I aspired to be when I was younger,” Mbeumo added.
Lookman recently earned the 2024 CAF African Player of the Year award after guiding Atalanta to the UEFA Europa League title and helping Nigeria reach the AFCON 2023 final.
Mbeumo, who switched international allegiance from France to Cameroon in 2022, has scored six goals in 22 appearances for the Indomitable Lions.
