My new year’s resolution is to bring AFCON gold to Nigeria — Lookman

Ademola Lookman has revealed that his New Year’s target for 2026 is to return the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy to Nigeria.

The Atalanta forward made the statement while speaking to journalists during a Super Eagles training session ahead of their second-round fixture at the ongoing AFCON in Morocco.

Asked about his ambitions for the new year, the 28-year-old said he hopes “to bring gold back home”.

Lookman also made it clear that the Super Eagles are not focused on avoiding any opponent in the tournament.

He noted that “if you want to win a tournament, you have to play the best”.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to take on Mozambique in the round of 16 on January 5 at the Fez Stadium, with kick-off set for 8 pm Nigerian time.

Nigeria topped Group C with a perfect record, winning all three matches to finish on nine points.

Mozambique progressed from Group F as one of the four best third-placed teams in the group stage.

The last AFCON encounter between Nigeria and Mozambique came at the 2010 edition in Angola, where the Super Eagles secured a 3-0 victory, with Peter Odemwingie scoring twice and Obafemi Martins adding the third.

The winner of the tie will advance to face either Algeria or the Democratic Republic of Congo in the quarter-finals.
