Team Nigeria has secured its first medals at the ongoing CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.
Divine Oladipo and Obiageri Amaechi won silver and bronze respectively in the women’s discus throw event on the opening day of the competition at the University of Ghana Stadium.
The event marked Oladipo’s international debut for Nigeria after the British-born 27-year-old previously represented the United Kingdom in several competitions.
Amaechi, meanwhile, continued her impressive performances for Nigeria since making her debut in 2022. She won bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham before claiming gold at the African Games in Accra the following year.
Tobi Amusan also advanced to the women’s 100m hurdles final after posting a season-best time of 12.82 seconds. She remains the favourite to secure her third African Athletics Championships title when the final takes place later on Wednesday.
There was initial drama in the men’s 100m heats involving Favour Ashe, who was first disqualified for a false start.
However, Nigeria successfully appealed the decision, and the 24-year-old was allowed to run alone, recording a time of 10.55 seconds, which earned him qualification for the semi-finals.
Ashe will compete in the semi-finals alongside fellow Nigerian Chidera Ezeakor, while Rosemary Chukwuma also progressed in the women’s 100m event.
