Nigerian Stars shine across Europe

Nigerian footballers enjoyed a successful 2025/2026 season across Europe, winning league titles, domestic cups and individual honours as campaigns concluded in several countries.

From Turkey and Scotland to Portugal and Belgium, Super Eagles and Super Falcons stars played key roles in their clubs’ triumphs, underlining their quality and consistency on the European stage.

Kelechi Iheanacho celebrated a domestic double with Celtic in Scotland, helping the club secure both the league title and the Scottish Cup. The Nigerian striker scored in Celtic’s 3-1 victory over Dunfermline in the cup final shortly after the club sealed the league crown.

“God’s time is the best. Double trophy. Double blessing. Chukwu’Okike Dalu,” Iheanacho wrote on X.

In Turkey, Victor Osimhen inspired Galatasaray to another Süper Lig title. The striker played a major role in the club’s Champions League campaign and helped secure automatic qualification for next season’s competition.

“What a journey this season has been full of sacrifices, pressure, smiles, pain, and unforgettable moments,” Osimhen wrote on Instagram while thanking supporters, teammates and coaches.

Paul Onuachu also enjoyed success in Turkey, finishing as the league’s top scorer and netting twice in Trabzonspor’s 2-1 Turkish Cup final victory over Konyaspor.

In Portugal, Zaidu Sanusi and Terem Moffi lifted the Taça de Portugal with FC Porto, while Raphael Onyedika helped Club Brugge win the Belgian Pro League after another impressive season.

Defender Igoh Ogbu claimed the Czech Liga title with Slavia Prague, while goalkeeper Francis Uzoho celebrated his first Cypriot league triumph with Omonia Nicosia.

Frank Onyeka also played an important role as Coventry City secured promotion to the English Premier League after winning the Championship title.

Among the women, Christy Ucheibe won a domestic treble with Benfica, while Shukurat Oladipo helped AS Roma secure the Serie A Femminile title and earned recognition as the league’s best defender. Rinsola Babajide also contributed to Roma’s success following her move from Spanish side UD Tenerife.

The Nigeria Football Federation congratulated the players on their achievements, with NFF president Ibrahim Gusau describing the successes as proof of the talent and readiness of Nigerian footballers ahead of future international competitions.

“It is a thing of joy to see our players winning trophies here and there,” Gusau said.
