Norway’s Football Federation (NFF) has called on FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign, saying he no longer has the institutional trust needed to lead world football.
NFF president Lise Klaveness announced the decision after a meeting of the federation’s governing bodies, adding that Norway would formally ask Infantino to step down despite his plans to seek re-election next March.
Klaveness said the FIFA president could no longer unite the organisation following growing controversy over his leadership, including the collapse of a proposal to open FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, to private investors.
Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, is currently the only declared candidate for the presidency and must secure a majority of votes from the organisation’s 211 member associations to win a fourth and final term.
The Norwegian federation also resolved to refer three matters to FIFA’s ethics committee, including the abandoned private investment plan, the lifting of United States forward Folarin Balogun’s suspension at the 2026 World Cup after intervention by President Donald Trump, and FIFA’s decision to award Trump a so-called Peace Prize.
Klaveness declined to comment on speculation linking her with the FIFA presidency, saying the focus should remain on governance issues rather than individuals.
