Bayern Munich launched their Champions League campaign in emphatic fashion on Thursday, scoring five second-half goals to demolish last season’s surprise performers Bodo/Glimt 5-0, with Michael Olise grabbing a brace.
Bodo/Glimt, managed by Kjetil Knutsen, had enjoyed a remarkable run in the 2025-26 competition, defeating Atletico Madrid, Manchester City and Inter Milan twice before reaching the round of 16. They looked capable of frustrating Bayern again after keeping the German giants scoreless in the opening 45 minutes.
Bayern, however, exploded after the break as Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane, Alphonso Davies and Olise found the net, while Bodo’s collapse was completed when Odin Bjortuft was sent off late in the game.
Musiala had Bayern’s best first-half opportunity when his difficult downward header was kept out by goalkeeper Nikita Haikin. Joshua Kimmich also went close, hitting the post with one long-range effort before another attempt was blocked by Haikin.
The Bodo goalkeeper was forced off at the interval after picking up an injury while making that save, leaving Julian Faye Lund to face Bayern’s second-half onslaught.
Bayern needed only 78 seconds after the restart to break the deadlock. Musiala fired a right-footed shot into the far corner after Kane’s effort deflected into his path.
Kane then doubled the advantage shortly after the hour mark, heading home from Olise’s free-kick.
Davies added a spectacular third in the 77th minute, unleashing a powerful strike from the edge of the box that flew into the net.
Olise soon got in on the act, curling a superb 25-yard effort into the top-left corner before Bjortuft was dismissed for bringing down the French winger near the edge of the penalty area.
Olise completed his brace in stoppage time, advancing before producing another composed finish into the same corner to seal Bayern’s commanding victory.
Kane, Olise Continue Impressive Form
Bayern’s attacking strength was once again on display after they scored 43 goals in last season’s Champions League before exiting in the semi-finals. Only Barcelona in 1999-00 and Paris Saint-Germain last season had previously scored more in a single campaign.
Their inability to break Bodo’s resistance in the first half was therefore unexpected, despite registering 11 shots and 1.0 expected goals.
Musiala’s opener eventually opened the floodgates. Bayern finished with 25 attempts, including 12 on target, and recorded 2.49 expected goals, while Bodo managed only three shots and 0.2 xG.
The five-goal performance was Bayern’s seventh occasion of scoring at least four goals in a Champions League match since the beginning of last season.
Kane and Olise were again central to the German champions’ attacking display. Among players from Europe’s top five leagues, Kane has recorded 39 goal involvements in 2026, comprising 34 goals and five assists, while Olise has 34, with 17 goals and 17 assists.
Both players were named among the Ballon d’Or nominees earlier this week. Although the award considers performances from the 2025-26 season and the World Cup, Kane’s outstanding Champions League run is strengthening his credentials.
The England captain has now scored in eight consecutive Champions League matches, leaving him one game short of Robert Lewandowski’s nine-match scoring streak for Bayern in 2021.
